How it works
Under rule 46 of the CGST Rules, a tax invoice must show, among other things:
- Your name, address and GSTIN.
- A serial number of up to 16 characters (letters, digits, hyphen and slash), unique for the financial year, and the date.
- The recipient’s name, address and GSTIN or UIN if registered. For an unregistered recipient, name, address and State are needed when the taxable value is ₹50,000 or more.
- HSN code, description, quantity and unit, total value and taxable value after discount.
- Tax rate and amount: CGST and SGST for a supply within a State, IGST between States.
- Place of supply with the State name for inter-State supplies, and the delivery address if different.
- Whether tax is payable on reverse charge, and your signature.
The template adds these up and lets you print. Check your rate with the GST calculator.
Things to know
- If your business must issue e-invoices, the invoice also needs the QR code with the Invoice Reference Number (IRN) from the e-invoice system. This template does not generate one.
- HSN digits on the invoice: 4 digits if your turnover last year was up to ₹5 crore, 6 digits above that. Up to ₹5 crore, you can leave the HSN off invoices to unregistered buyers (Notification 78/2020-Central Tax).
- Exports and SEZ supplies need a specific endorsement on the invoice.
- This is a learning aid, not advice.
